Southern Baked Mac and Cheese on a Plate

This Southern baked mac and cheese is creamy, cheesy, and comforting. Made with a blend of cheeses and baked to golden perfection, it’s the perfect side dish or main course for any occasion.

  • 1 pound elbow macaroni
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 4 cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere cheese
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cook macaroni according to package directions until al dente. Drain well.
  3. In a large saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour until smooth. Gradually whisk in milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until sauce has thickened slightly.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in salt, pepper, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  6. Add cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gruyere, and Parmesan cheeses, stirring until melted and smooth.
  7. Add cooked macaroni to the cheese sauce and stir to coat.
  8. Pour macaroni and cheese mixture into the prepared baking dish.
  9. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.
  10. Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For an extra crispy topping, sprinkle breadcrumbs over the mac and cheese before baking. Serve warm as a side dish or main course.
