Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, removed from casing
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 pound pasta (penne, rotini, or your favorite shape)
  • 4 cups chicken broth
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • Fresh basil, for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, brown the Italian sausage over medium-high heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain off any excess grease.
  2. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  3. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer.
  4. Add the pasta and chicken broth to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
  5. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until the pasta is cooked through and the liquid is absorbed, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in the Parmesan cheese.
  7. Garnish with fresh basil and serve immediately.

Notes

For a spicier dish, use hot Italian sausage or add more red pepper flakes. You can also add vegetables like bell peppers or zucchini to the skillet along with the onion.
