Creamy Bechamel Sauce

This creamy and classic homemade bechamel sauce is surprisingly easy to make! Perfect as a base for gratins, lasagnas, and countless other dishes.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups whole milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Pinch of white pepper (optional)

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  2. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, a little at a time, ensuring each addition is fully incorporated before adding more.
  4. Bring the mixture to a simmer, stirring constantly. Reduce the heat to low and continue to simmer for 5-7 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and coats the back of a spoon.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in the salt, nutmeg, and white pepper (if using).
  6. Serve immediately or store in the refrigerator for later use.

Notes

For a richer flavor, infuse the milk with a bay leaf and onion while heating, then strain before using.
