Delectable Butter Chicken Dish

Indulge in the creamy richness of homemade Butter Chicken! This classic Indian dish features tender chicken simmered in a luscious tomato-based sauce, perfect for a comforting and flavorful meal.

  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 (14.5 oz) can diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 cup tomato puree
  • 1 tsp garam masala
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder (adjust to taste)
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Marinate the chicken: In a bowl, combine the chicken with lemon juice, salt, turmeric powder, and ginger-garlic paste. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours in the refrigerator.
  2. Cook the chicken: Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or pot over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook until browned on all sides and cooked through, about 5-7 minutes. Remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the sauce: In the same skillet, add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes. Add the diced tomatoes, tomato puree, garam masala, and chili powder. Stir well and bring to a simmer.
  4. Simmer and blend: Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and simmer for 15 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.
  5. Blend the sauce: Carefully transfer the sauce to a blender or use an immersion blender to blend until smooth.
  6. Finish the dish: Return the blended sauce to the skillet. Add the cooked chicken, butter, and heavy cream. Stir well to combine and simmer for another 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
  7. Garnish and serve: Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan bread.

Notes

For a richer flavor, use ghee instead of butter. Serve with a dollop of plain yogurt or a sprinkle of extra cilantro.
